PTA Secondary School
Welcome to the home page of the Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) of the Secondary School of the Berlin International School.
General Information
By definition all parents, teachers, and staff are members of the PTA. Meetings are open to all members, but it is expected that parent class representatives and teacher representatives attend. There are at least two meetings per term.
Structure
The PTA is headed by the PTA Board which is elected by the parent body at the beginning of each school year. There are currently four chairpersons, two for the Middle School section (grades 6-8) and two for the IGCSE/IB section (grades 9-12).
In order to be able to cater to the different interests of Middle School and IGCSE/IB students and parents, we intend to break up into two separate groups at some PTA meetings to discuss age and grade level related topics.
Parent Class Representatives
The PTA is supported by parent class representatives who are elected by the parents at the first class meeting of each school year and are the communication link between the homeroom teacher, the parents and the PTA. Their role is to:
- maintain close contact with the homeroom teachers
- help distribute information from the PTA and the homeroom teachers to the parents (via group email, fax, hard copy or phone)
- keep the teachers briefed on parent views, requests and wishes
- prepare class lists and update contact numbers
- attend the PTA and homeroom meetings
- support PTA activities and projects
Goals
The PTA’s main objectives are
- to serve as a communication link between parents, teachers and administration
- to develop a close-knit community at BIS
- to establish mutual working relations with the PTA Primary School, the Fundraising Club, and the Student Council
Activities and Projects for the year 2008/2009
The PTA would like to continue some traditional social and educational activities and projects and introduce a few new ones as well. These activities and projects include:
- help to coordinate volunteer support for school events
- organize teachers lunches at Parent Teacher Conferences, held twice a year
- organize a Christmas lunch for all staff
- organize bake sales in order to raise funds for those activities
- organize guest speakers on various topics for the PTA meetings
- assist a wide variety of After-School-Activities
- assist with updating the school website
- assist with the smooth running of the Secondary School library
- organize the two big events of the year of the Secondary School – the Valentine’s Day Dance and assist with the Graduation Celebration
In order to be able to accomplish all these tasks, the PTA needs the active support of numerous volunteers. Ideally, sub-committees should be formed so that parents can participate in various activities related to building a good school community spirit. Parents who do not have much time to spare, may be able to assist us in other areas and your suggestions and comments are always welcome. Please feel free to contact us at the e-mail addresses mentioned in the right column.
