Celebrating Diversity

“Diversity may be the hardest thing for a society to live with, and perhaps the most dangerous thing for a society to be without.” (William Sloane Coffin Jr.
)

At B.I.S., we value the similarities and differences each person's cultural heritage brings to our lives.
We celebrate and share our diversity on a daily basis both inside and outside the classroom in order to enrich the learning experience for our students and the whole school community.

We believe that culture is broad and complex.
We understand that cultural identity comes from traits and values learned through membership in micro-cultures based on ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, class, native language, geographical region and other factors. For us, culture is much more than a study of food, fashion, folklore, festivals and fame.

Cultural Celebrations
We bring cultural celebrations into B.I.S. in a variety of ways. We welcome guest speakers, parents and other family members to come into class to share their experiences and traditions. We encourage students to organize cultural celebrations and share their cultures, languages and customs with all.

A favorite tradition at B.I.S. is "International Day", which takes place once a year as a whole school (including International Early Childhood Centre) activity. On one of the last Saturdays of the school year all parents, students, friends and embassies are invited to come to school and set up a stand where they present their countries through information, foods, drinks and games. All countries are invited to take part in the “Parade of Nations” and present some of the countries’ culture, e.g. dance or music in the Stage Program lasting from 13:00 – 17:00.
