Learning at B.I.S.

Our diversity provides a multi-cultural learning experience

Berlin International School has more than 60 nationalities represented in a student body of about 820, which offers a rich, multi-cultural educational experience for staff, students and parents.

PRIMARY SCHOOL (ages 6 to 11):
The Primary School is a warm, friendly learning environment where, in addition to developing the skills and attributes of the PYP, the scope and sequence documents of the PYP are used in all subject areas.
We help our students to develop a sense of themselves as lifelong learners and problem solvers. To do this, our students must acquire skills in reading, writing, math and critical thinking. They must also be armed with the ability to become skillful decision-makers and responsible citizens in a global community. The diversity of our many cultures is a strength that we use to make B.I.S. an exceptional educational environment that supports this development.

SECONDARY SCHOOL (ages 11 to 18):
The B.I.S. Middle School Programme is in place for Grades 6-8. The Middle School program has been especially designed to meet the needs, talents and interests of the young adolescent. At B.I.S. we believe that the middle school years can be the most productive and exciting of all, despite the stresses of physical change and the uncertainties of identity-formation associated with the age group. Thus, we try to capitalize on the energy, enthusiasm and natural curiosity of emerging adolescents while, at the same time, providing the guidance and structure they need to deepen their knowledge and understanding and to enable them to take increasing responsibility for their own learning.
The High School is designed to prepare students for post-secondary education in colleges and universities throughout the world. Students earn the B.I.S. diploma by acquiring the requisite number of credits in various curriculum areas, described in our Program of Studies, and most students opt to pursue the International Baccalaureate diploma. A full host of academic courses offer students a most challenging program while also allowing them opportunities to stretch themselves by exploring interests in a variety of special areas.

We have offered the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) for Grades 9 and 10 since 2002, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB Diploma) for Grades 11 and 12 since 2000. Our Diploma results are usually above the world average, with a large number of bilingual Diplomas awarded.

Furthermore Berlin International School (Campus Dahlem) also offers examinations for Berufsbildungsreife in Grade 9 and Middle School Examination (MSA) in Grade 10. Students who are interested in obtaining the German Abitur, can sit exams at Internationale Schule Berlin (ISB - Campus Steglitz).
