Music, Drama & Film
Performing Arts at Berlin International School
Performing Arts plays a prominent role at B.I.S. as they are very popular with our students. They provide opportunities to prove themselves, to explore their creativity and to improve their skills.
The music programme is currently one of the focuses at B.I.S. A music technology lab and a selection of instruments have been purchased to increase the opportunities for our students to explore their creative abilities.
The school offers a wide range of opportunities to perform. The Primary Choir has currently more than 70 members and performs regularly at school events and also outside of school. The choir has travelled abroad for an exchange program and the school hosted an international choir festival with choirs from 4 countries.
In continuation of the Primary Choir, a Middle School Girls Choir was founded last year and has now almost 30 members. The predominantly modern and popular repertoire is widely appreciated by the performers and the audiences at many school events.
The school’s instrumental performers have got together in a Jazz Band, a Rock Band and several informal groups. Plans are underway to further extend the instrumental program.
INSTRUMENTAL TEACHING / TUITION
Instrumental Tuition is offered on a large variety of instruments as part of the After School Activities Programme. Further information regarding the programme is available from the coordinator: firstname.lastname@example.org.
One of the most effective ways of teaching music has been through private lessons. It offers immediate evaluation and assessment between teacher and student. This process offers one of the most beneficial ways of significant musical development.
We feel that we have a remarkable availability of highly qualified private music teachers at Berlin International School. Private lessons for Violin, Guitar (Classical, Rock and Jazz), Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Saxophone, Trumpet, Tuba, Trombone, Cello, Percussion, Drums, Harp, and voice can be taken on the school premises.
Drama plays a very important role in school life. A wide range of skills and talents can be nurtured through participation in Drama, including confidence building, assertiveness training, voice production, movement, mime, improvisation, empathy and dance. Technical skills too can be acquired, such as stage design, wardrobe, sound, lighting and theatrical make-up, as well as many leadership roles and general people management skills.
Drama is one of the integrated subjects taught at the Primary level. Grades 1 – 5 are offered opportunities all through the year to perform. The culmination of the drama program in the Primary School is the annual Primary Musical: Pinocchio, Aladdin, The Wizard of Oz, etc.
During the Middle School years, students learn not only various dramatic techniques but also social skills. Teamwork, intercultural communication and the ability to express one’s own thoughts are core goals of the middle school drama curriculum.
Students in grades 9 and 10 have the opportunity to select the IGCSE Drama Course. This course gives a deeper insight into dramatic techniques and styles and also deepens the understanding of drama. Students find out about the different approaches of professional theatre.
August 2013, B.I.S. starts down a new path with the introduction of Film at the IB level. We will be implementing the new programme, re-written by the IBO, to allow our students to explore this art form as an individual and as an ensemble member; as a global citizen, and as a developing artist. Members of the class will participate as performers, dramaturges, audience members, and designers.
Film is both a powerful communication medium and an art form. The creation, presentation and study of film requires courage, passion and curiosity: courage to create individually and as part of a team, to explore ideas through action and harness the imagination, and to experiment; passion to communicate and to act communally, and to research and formulate ideas eloquently; curiosity about self and others and the world, about different traditions, techniques and knowledge, about the past and the future, and about the limitless possibilities of human expression through the art form.
